Leading union leader visits Andover

ONE of Britain’s most outspoken trade union leaders was in Andover today.

Bob Crow, the leader of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union visited the town to meet union members and present long service awards to qualifying people.

Mr Crow has been in charge of the union since 2002, following the death of Jimmy Knapp, and he is known as a staunch defender of workers’ rights.

Union membership has risen significantly during his time at the helm.

He is also a vocal critic of many of Britain’s privatised rail operating companies including South West Trains.

The union itself is relatively new but one of its main components, the National Union of Railwaymen, has a long history dating back to before the First World War.
