More than 30 firefighters from across Hampshire have been battling a barn blaze throughout the night.

Crews were called to a 60m-by-40m barn full of hay and straw, off The St, in Barton Stacey, near Winchester, yesterday at 4.30pm.

In total 35 firefighters, six pumps and a water carrier attended.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said at about 8.30pm last night they had brought the fire under control, stopping it from spreading to a nearby barn, so had gone down to two engines.

He added Redbridge, Romsey, Fareham, Hamble, Droxford, Winchester, Andover, Overton, Basingstoke and Sutton Scotney Fire Stations had been rotating through the night to keep it under control and would continue to do so for most of today as well.

"The fire is too big for us to put out, there is too much hay and straw so we are having to let it burn down in a controlled way before we hand it back to the farm," a spokesman said.

Fire crews will remain on the scene.
