A CONCERNED group of students from Testbourne Community School in Whitchurch have started a petition for traffic calming outside its grounds.

Pupils are organising the petition in the wake of concerns about speeding on Micheldever Road, and plan to hand it to Whitchurch Town Council.

The petition says: “We have recently noticed the speed the vehicles are travelling up and down Micheldever Road and it is very dangerous.

“We feel that by having a calming method along this road will reduce the speed of cars and make them more aware of their surroundings.

“Many young children need to cross this road to get to the primary school and the secondary school, we want to put parents’ worries aside and make sure their children get to and from school safely.

“We as students have witnessed the dangers of this road and we feel the need to campaign for the safety of others.”

The school is running a campaign called ‘Active Citizenship’ which contributes 30 per cent to the students’ final GCSE in Citizenship.

This part of the grade focusses on the issue of road safety on the busy stretch of road that leads to both Whitchurch Primary School and Testbourne Community School.

Graeme Irwin, deputy head teacher of Testbourne Community School, said: “We are delighted to be able to support our students in their quest to make the local environment safer for all members of the community. It is clearly a subject that the students feel passionate about and it is up to them to try to secure the support of the community before putting their ideas to the council.”
