The Mayor of Tidworth Town Council has today resigned after six years citing "personal reasons".

Chris Franklin has handed in his resignation immediately terminating his role which he was elected to as chairman in 2010 and then mayor from 2011 onwards.

Councillor Mark Connolly will be taking over as mayor and chairman until the local elections in May.

The town council has released the following statement on their website and social media: "Councillor Chris Franklin has resigned as mayor and from Tidworth Town Council with immediate effect for personal reasons.

"Councillor Mark Connolly will take over the role of mayor and chairman of the council until the town elections in May 2017. A deputy mayor will be elected at the next full town council meeting. The good work of the council will continue as normal with its strong leadership team and councillors.

"The council wishes to thank Mr Franklin for his services as mayor over the last five years."
