A MAN who died on the M3 "walked onto the carriagway" following a crash, according to authorities.

The man was caught in the collision shortly after 6.30am today on the M3 southbound carriageway between Winchester Services and junction eight for the A303.

South Central Amublance Service say the man got out of his car following the crash and walked onto the carriageway.

He was then struck by a vehicle and died at the scene.

A spokesperson for SCAS said: "It appears that one person involved in the collision got out of the car and was struck by another vehicle.

"We sent out two ambulance and a paramedic team leader to the scene.

"The male struck by the vehicle died at the scene."

Police have launched an investigation, but have yet to confirm the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The crash caused chaos in the area with delays on many surrounding routes, such as the A303 and A34.

Traffic was diverted at junction eight where drivers can take the A303 westbound and the A34 Southbound to re-join the M3 at junction nine.

The crash caused delays on the northbound carriageway due to motorists slowing down to look.

The M3 road opened shortly before noon.
