FRIENDS and family have paid tribute to a man described as a “wonderful character with a big heart” who died as a result of an alleged vicious assault.

Richard Bernard, or “Bernie” as he was known, grew up and lived in Andover from the 1960s, attending Winton School, until the early 1990s when his family moved to Derby.

News has recently reached friends who remain in Andover that the 51-year-old was the victim of an alleged attack at his Trocadero Court home in the Normanton area of the city on May 24.

He was found collapsed outside his flat and died from the stab wounds he sustained.

Old friends of Mr Bernard, Rhonda Cleary and Mark Broker have set up a Facebook page in memory of him and will be holding a memorial event at the Southampton Arms on Friday, September 2 at 7pm.

Remembering her close friend, Rhonda said: “Bernie was a wonderful colourful character, full of life and laughter with a very big heart.

“He loved living in the fast lane, I always remember holding on to my seat as Bernie dodged in and out of the traffic in his convertible sports car, telling me he always wanted to be a racing driver.

“Bernie hadn’t been seen in Andover for a good few years but everybody that has shared their feelings has spoken about their utter shock and deep sadness at the absolutely devastating news – it is so very tragic.

“He will be very missed by so many people, he touched many hearts, on a very deep level and our sincere condolences go out to his family. Be at peace Bernie and keep shining like that star you always were.”

In a statement released by police at the time of his death, Mr Bernard’s mother Nita, sister Claire and brother Andrew said: “We are devastated to hear the tragic news about Richard, a much loved son and brother.”

It is understood that Mr Bernard’s mother Nita worked as a teaching assistant at Wolverdene Special School in Andover until the late 1970s.

Also paying tribute to him, former pupil David Wybrow said: “Nita was always incredibly proud of Richard as she was always mentioning about him when we were at school.”

Three men have been arrested and charged in connection with Mr Bernard’s death.
