RED-FACED council officials have apologised for an error printed on letters sent to residents across Test Valley this week.

Test Valley Borough Council has been posting confirmation of voter registration letters, asking people to tell the authority if their details need changing.

But the notices sparked confusion because the example given was wrong.

In the table, the first name is listed under the surname heading and the surname is listed under the first name heading.

A spokesman for the council said: "We regret that unfortunately there has been a printing error.

"TVBC is very sorry for this error and would like to confirm that householders do NOT have to contact the council to amend their details if this is the only incorrect information in the letter.

"If any other personal information is incorrect then you will still need to contact us. For example, if some or all of the people no longer live at this address, then please go to www.registerbyinternet.co.uk/testvalley and follow the instructions.

"Alternatively please call 01264 368000, e-mail elecreg@testvalley.gov.uk or make any amendments on the letter itself, sign in the signature box and return in the envelope provided."
