Andover Flower Club

THE September meeting of Andover Flower Club welcomed Emily Broomhead from Salisbury whose demonstration was entitled ‘Seasonal Sticks and Stems.

Beginning with sticks from the herb garden of fennel, rosemary, sage and mint together with large ivy leaves, Emily built up her first design, completing it with wonderful stems of sunflowers. She went on to create other stunning arrangements with a variety of sticks such as contorted hazel and even rose stems, while completing the effect of each design with beautiful colour from gerberas, gladioli and roses to chrysanthemums.

As the arrangements are raffled at the end of the afternoon, Emily added some miniature designs to her main show pieces, thus giving more members the chance to be a lucky winner.

The competition piece for members was ‘Golden Glow’ which created a very sunny effect and results were as follows:- Advanced: 1, Mavis Cotton; 2, Hilary Eddy; joint 3, Elizabeth Howard and Sandra Oliver. Intermediate: 1, Jackie Hasler. Novice: 1, Sue Bartram; 2, Beryl Lawrence; 3, Cynthia Jeffries.

The judge’s choice cup for the entry the judge would most like to take home was won by Mavis Cotton.

The next meeting will be held on 7 October at 2.00pm at St Ann’s Hall, Suffolk Road, Andover when members will enjoy a speaker rather than a flower arranger. The speaker is Tricia Lewis from Bournemouth whose talk will be ‘Remembering Joyce about the late, great Joyce Grenfell. Members are invited to enter the competition entitled ‘Let’s Dance’.

Next year the club will celebrate its diamond jubilee with special events planned. If anyone would care to join this friendly club, enjoy regular demonstrations and workshops and be part of their celebrations, please feel free to contact Bronda Dossett on (01264) 365463 or Sandra Oliver on (01264) 353972.
