A YOUNG swimmer is set to receive an award for his achievements in the pool.

Archie Cook, of Pearman Drive, Andover, will receive an award at this year’s Southern Water Learn to Swim Achiever Awards taking place on 13 July at Mountbatten Leisure Centre, in Portsmouth.

The eight-year-old has been having swimming lessons at Andover Leisure Centre.

The awards are given to children who have shown great courage in overcoming particular difficulties or for exceptional performance and will be presented by Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew.

Archie has congenital heart disease, which means he has had three holes in his heart and his arteries were not formed properly. He has had two open heart surgeries and a pacemaker fitted.

Because of this, he is not able to play contact sports, which is why his parents encouraged him to swim.

Archie’s swimming teacher Claire Hewlett said: “Archie has had many physical and emotional challenges to overcome.

However, he comes to every lesson with an exceptional attitude.

“He deserves to be recognised and he should be incredibly proud.”

Archie’s mum, Tonia Cook, said: “Claire has encouraged him all the way and built up his confidence. He loves his lessons and it is a joy to see him enjoying them.”
