THIS week’s wild weather broke records.
Local weather recorder Trevor Wheeler says that 55.7mm (2.19ins) of rain fell in a 24 hour period ended this morning making Monday the wettest December day since his records began in 1967.
The only day wetter was 29 October 2000 when 64.4 mm of rain fell at Hurstbourne Tarrant.
The rain was accompanied by wind.
Trees were uprooted and rail services disrupted although the first train through Andover to London was able to run just after 11am following checks along the line.
Power cuts blacked out large areas of Andover for several hours although most homes and businesses were reconnected by 10a, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are forecast to be quieter but a new low pressure area is expected to approach the British Isles on Friday giving further spells of very wet and windy weather.
