BUDDING musicians across Hampshire are being invited to bid for a share of funding to help them develop their talent.

Applications are being invited for the 2014 round of Dayas Music Scholarships, an annual grants scheme for those over 18 which is administered by Hampshire County Council.

The scholarship scheme was set up from a sum of money left by Gwendoline Hayton (nee Dayas), a former Hampshire music teacher, in her will.

Councillor Peter Edgar, executive member for education, said: “The gift of music is invaluable.

“Singing or playing an instrument is immensely rewarding and has an added benefit in contributing to emotional wellbeing.

“The Dayas Music Scholarships give people above school-age the chance to apply for some financial support to pursue new musical interests, to have lessons to help them refresh rusty musical skills in singing or playing an instrument, or to further develop skills in areas such as composing, conducting and performing.”

He added: “The application process is in writing so there need be no audition fears – this is not the X Factor or Hampshire’s Got Talent, however a Dayas scholarship grant could help you become a celebrity amongst your family and friends!”

Application forms and details are available from Hampshire County Council’s music service on 02380 652037 or by email to music.service@hants.gov.uk.

The closing date for applications is 31 January 2014.
