Valley delivers on homes plan
2:00pm Thursday 8th August 2013 in News
MORE than 360 affordable new homes have been built in Test Valley over the past year.
Half of these homes are for social rent while 34 per cent are shared ownership – where the resident part rents and part-buys the property. The remaining 16 per cent comprises a variety of affordable rented properties as well as first buy and discounted sale homes, which are national initiatives to help people with small deposits and a limited mortgage onto the housing ladder.
Sonia Heaton, who lives with husband Justin and four children in a newly built affordable rented home in Andover, said: “Moving to our new home has made such a difference – we feel so much happier.
“We love our new home and when we moved in we felt like we were on holiday, thinking we would be going home at the end of it. It’s like a dream.
“[The new house] is really nice and we are really happy. It’s spacious, bright and airy. I really like new houses, there is something about them – a fresh, clean slate.”
Councillor Sandra Hawke, Test Valley Borough Council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “This is fantastic news. I am delighted that we have not only met, but significantly exceeded, our target for delivering affordable homes in the borough this year.
“These homes provide a lifeline to hundreds of local families and enable them to stay in the areas where they want to live. This reduces the number of people having to change jobs or move schools.
“Though the majority of homes are in urban areas, the council is also undertaking significant work with parishes to build more affordable properties in rural areas for people with local connections.”
More than 50 per cent of affordable homes delivered by the council are two bed flats and houses, while three bed houses account for 36 per cent of the total.
Cllr Hawke added: “I am extremely proud of what we have achieved over the past few years and continue to be impressed by the quality of the houses and flats being built in Test Valley.
“I look forward to the coming year and the delivery of further affordable homes across the borough.”
