THE family of Troggs singer and songwriter Reg Presley have given their blessing to the idea of a blue plaque in his memory.

Andover Town Council wants to put a plaque in the High Street close to where the band used to rehearse in the 1960s.

In a letter, Reg’s family – Karen, Jason and Brenda Presley – said: “Although Reg was a very modest man he would be honoured that the town was remembering him.”

They also requested that the plaque made mention of The Troggs.

Phil North, chairman of the town’s policy and resources committee, said: “It is only right that we remember someone who was referred to by many as Mr Andover in the High Street where he practised – and I’m delighted the Presley family are firmly behind the project.

“The Heritage Foundation have agreed to work in partnership with the town council to place the blue plaque in Andover and subject to final approvals, it will be unveiled in the autumn.”

Reg died on 4 February this year after a long career in the music business. The Troggs had several top 10 hits in the 1960s – many written by Reg.

Reg’s song Love Is All Around was later recorded by REM and Wet Wet Wet and became the theme to one of the most popular British films of the 1990s, Four Weddings and a Funeral.

The song was an international hit and topped the UK singles charts for 15 weeks. It was played at Reg’s funeral service at Basingstoke Crematorium.
