Raw sewage pours down high street Raw sewage pours down high street

RAW sewage ran down Andover town centre on market day – for the second time in five weeks.

Pedestrians had to pick their way through the mess as it seeped from manhole covers in Union Street and flowed down into the market and High Street last Thursday afternoon.

Southern Water apologised for the sewage, blaming it on a build-up of cooking fats.

However, Dave Stanbridge, who owns Tip Top Balloons in Union Street, claimed that the same thing happened on 7 February this year and several times before that.

He said: “It has happened quite a few times, and this was the worst I have known it.

“I noticed it flooding and called the water board. It has forced up a couple of manhole covers right through the market and behind.

“It’s a nightmare. We are all losing trade as people are avoiding it.”

The people that run the fast food businesses and put fat down our drains really need to to wake up. It has been known for decades now that this should not be done because of the blockages it causes.
Do they not realise that spent oil and fat are useful resources that can be sold to make bio-diesel and other products?
We should be angry at the errant businesses, not the water utility.
