Staff at local hospitals happy in their work - NHS survey

STAFF at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are motivated and would recommend their hospitals at Andover, Winchester and Basingstoke as good places to work or be treated as a patient , says the national NHS Staff Survey,. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (HHFT), which runs Andover War Memorial Hospital, Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital and Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester ranked better than average (when compared to other similar NHS trusts) in the following areas: Staff agreed that their role makes a difference to patients, placing HHFT in the top 20% of similar NHS trusts, Staff said that hand washing materials were always available andStaff had equality and diversity training, which helps them understand the needs of, and provide better care for, patients.
Chief Nurse and Chief Operating Officer, Donna Green, said “It is a reflection of the dedication of our staff that during a period of change and increased national pressure on hospital services, they stayed focused on patient care. In most areas there has not been a significant change in the results of the survey compared to previous years, despite the fact that this survey was carried out in the autumn of 2012 when many staff were adjusting to new roles and working practices as a result of the integration which formed Hampshire Hospitals earlier in the year. “It is a testimony that so many of our staff would recommend Hampshire Hospitals as a good place to work and to be treated. I’m proud of our caring, compassionate staff who do their best for patients every day and continue to manage the significant pressures that the service sometimes experiences.”
Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust scored higher than average for the amount of staff reporting that they had experienced violence, harassment, bullying or abuse from patients, relatives or the public in the last twelve months. There was a slight increase in the amount of staff saying they felt stressed and that they were working extra hours, although this was still below average in comparison to other trusts. Associate Director of Workforce, Jo Brooks, said: “We provide a range of support services for staff including a free Employee Assistance Programme through which staff can access a range of services from debt advice to counselling. Our analysis shows that staff are more likely to suffer stress related to things happening in their personal life, and the support is there to help with both home and work issues. We offer guidance and training for managers to help them support their staff. We also have health promotion campaigns and events to help staff maintain a work life balance.” Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is currently recruiting for a range of roles in Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester, including midwives, nurses, domestic team members, therapists, security, reception and administration.
