Remembering El Alamein

THE village of Enham Alamein was transported back to the 1940s over the weekend to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of El Alamein which turned the tide of the Second World War.

A series of events and re-enactments evoked the famous wartime spirit while veterans rubbed shoulders with those who were wearing their uniforms from yesteryear.

Event organisers from Enham Liz Cosgrove and Caroline Gumn said everyone who attended deserved their thanks but the biggest thank you goes to The Garrison, a volunteer hobby group of historians.

Liz said: “The sun shone and hundreds came to join in with a weekend that far exceeded our hopes and expectations.

“From the tiny desert bikes through to the massive 25 pounder guns rocking the village with their salutes, it was a perfect occasion.

“Our village green was buzzing with atmosphere so beautifully enhanced by the amazing Memphis Belle and her velvet voice.

“The Cottage on the Green was lovingly transformed into a 1940s house and as you walked through the door it felt like you had stepped back in time.

“Our tiny church was full of visitors viewing our battle history exhibition with its original exhibits and displays.

“So many of our older residents have enjoyed the memories and so many of our younger ones have learnt an awful lot.”

The important part of the weekend came on Sunday when the formal commemorations began with a 25 pounder gun salute and the ringing of the original Alamein station bell. This was followed by a memorial concert by Test Valley Brass and a thanksgiving service.

The address was given by Chris Pritchard whose father was Chaplin at the Battle and who displayed a cross that was made from wood and shells found on the battle field.
