A FIRST-TIME buyer is to make national news in an advertising feature promoting shared ownership as a way of stepping on the property ladder.

Next month, Adam Lacey, 29, will be pictured in a special property supplement in The Mirror as Kingfisher Housing Association takes advertorial space to give national coverage to the 150 shared ownership apartments it is selling in a Berkeley Homes scheme, creating new homes from the old IBM office building in the centre of Basingstoke.

Mr Lacey was one of the first to commit to buying a shared ownership apartment from Kingfisher in Skyline Plaza.

He applied for a shared ownership purchase last autumn and will be moving into a one-bedroomed apartment on the fifth floor of Skyline Plaza at the end of May.

Currently living with his family in Fleet, Mr Lacey has bought a half-share in the £150,000 apartment and will top up his mortgage repayments with a monthly rent of around £260.

Mr Lacey, who works for IBM Financial Services in Hook, said: "This is the only way I could get a foot on the ladder and this was where I was hoping to buy.

"Skyline Plaza is in the perfect location. I can even go by train to work and the apartments are modern and open plan and so to my taste."

Kingfisher released 49 units last September and successful sales have seen the majority going to first-time buyers. Most buyers are from Basingstoke and are living at home with their families or in rented accommodation.

Martin Heydon, group sales manager for Kingfisher, said: "Over the past three months, we have put more than 50 shared ownership units under offer in Hampshire, Berkshire and Wiltshire. It shows the significant change the housing market has gone through.

"It means that first-time buyers are now about to enjoy home ownership. Their dreams are becoming reality."

As for appearing in the national press, Mr Lacey said: "It's scary but it's the least I can do to say thank you to Kingfisher for all its help."
