THE wide range of community events that are held throughout the summer months are a great opportunity to catch up with the many local organisations and people who play such an important role in shaping the community in which we live.
On Sunday, the borough mayor, Councillor George Hood, and his wife held the annual Civic Reception at Oakley Hall, bringing together those who have, over the years, served the community as mayor, councillors or through other local voluntary organisations.
I think it is important that this group of people, who are so often the unsung heroes in our community, are recognised for their considerable contribution over many years.
I was pleased to be able to attend and to express my support for the vital role they play in making our part of Hampshire such a great place to live.
TRADITIONAL flower and produce shows have long held a special place in the Basingstoke calendar of events.
With our roots firmly set in an agricultural heritage, it is unsurprising that many communities still hold popular and thriving events of this kind.
The Kempshott Flower and Vegetable Show was held last Sunday, in The Walled Garden, at Down Grange, and continues to go from strength-to-strength after the organisation was taken over by residents.
When I arrived, the BBC broadcast of Gardeners' Question Time was well under way. There was also a wide range of produce on show and numerous craft and plant stalls offering an array of tempting goods for the many visitors who attended.
Events like this are critical in binding together our communities and I commend the entire team involved in organising this spectacular event.
SUNDAY was a particularly busy day for Basingstoke residents with numerous community events.
For me, the day culminated in the annual concert by Basingstoke Male Voice Choir at the splendidly refurbished Haymarket theatre.
I was delighted to be able to attend with my elder son Jack, who himself has a keen interest in music.
We were treated to a superb evening's entertainment, highlighting, yet again, the musical talent that we have in Basingstoke.
