Tax u-turn will increase debt

MONDAY of this week was "Tax Freedom Day".

Most of us pay a bit of our tax bill every month through PAYE, but if we didn't, then this is the day when most people have earned what is needed to cover their tax bill from the Government and start to earn money that they can spend for themselves.

What is even more shocking is that Tax Freedom Day would be "celebrated" on June 14, some two weeks later, if the Government came clean on the level of national debt.

As recently as a fortnight ago, the Government announced a u-turn regarding the axing of the 10p tax rate.

What it talked less about was that this was to be paid for by adding another £2.7billion to the debt of this country and that now its credit has run out.

Little wonder that the Government is silent on the unsustainable levels of personal debt in this country - its own finances do not stand close scrutiny.

  • LIKE many parents, I am concerned about the mixed messages young people have heard about the use of cannabis and its legality.
  • I am pleased that the Government has decided that the downgrading of cannabis was a mistake and that this change will be reversed.

The debate around cannabis has been confusing for parents and children alike. But there really should be no confusion at all.

The harm that cannabis can cause, particularly to the mental health of those who use it, is well documented. Cannabis has never been safe - and we have to ensure our children know that this is the case.

  • I WAS delighted to be asked to attend the opening of a new garden at the Castle Hill pre-school last Saturday.
  • I was impressed by the dedication of the staff and committee and their commitment to the children in their care.

Pre-school is a vital part of our children's early years and sets the foundations for their future - they deserve our support and congratulations on the excellent work that they do.
