THE QMC student who chaired last week's pre-election debate believes that the event gave young people a good insight into the world of politics.
Tom Childs, the secretary at the students’ union, who chaired the hour-long debate, told The Gazette: “It is great for young people as it shows them what goes on in politics and what all the candidates have to offer.”
The 18-year-old added: “They (debates) are vital for young people because if they don’t know what each candidate stands for, how are they going to make an informed vote? I think with the event here today and the buzz around the college, everyone will be more inclined to vote.”
Seventeen-year-old Holly Locke, who is the vice-president of the students’ union, added: “I found it very interesting. It is good because some students our age don’t understand it or feel it doesn’t affect them. It is questions like what they would do about education and students can hear the answers firsthand.”
Jessica Nicholas, an 18-year-old English, history and politics student at the college, said: “I thought it was really good and it was really nice to see a personal take on national level debates.”
