BASINGSTOKE MP Maria Miller has resigned from her position as Culture Secretary at the heart of Government, this morning, following the public row over her public expenses.

In a letter of resignation to Prime Minister David Cameron, the MP said the controversy “has become a distraction from the vital work this government is doing”.

David Cameron has said he was “sorry” to receive the letter, but has accepted her decision to leave her position in the Cabinet.

The news followed mounting pressure for the Culture Secretary to resign after she was criticised in an investigation into her second home expenses, by Parliamentary Commissioner, Kathryn Hudson.

Although Mrs Miller was cleared of deliberately submitting expense claims that she was not entitled to for her Wimbledon second home, she was ordered to repay £5,800 to cover the costs of over-claiming mortgage expenses on the second home after she failed to cut her claims as interest rates fell.

However, Parliamentary Commissioner, Kathryn Hudson recommended that the Basingstoke MP repay £45,800.

But the 10 MPs and three lay people on the committee on standards told Mrs Miller that she should pay back just £5,800 overclaimed in mortgage interest in 2009.

Inevitable and overdue. Now let's hope her party can persuade her to step aside as our MP and replace her with a local candidate who doesn't mind commuting.

She is and has been an utter disgrace who has besmirched our fair Borough
She can now spend more time at her local luxury home paid for by hard earned tax-payers monies. .

She won't step down as MP.

The question now is will the local Cons select her as candidate for next year and risk a hugely embarrassing defeat?

I don't normally talk to campaign doorsteppers during elections however next year I may make an exception.

Even giving her resignation she leaves in an arrogant and 'I am blameless' tone. You are to blame. She must be investigated by the Police and deselected.

Who on Earth wants her to carry on being the MP for Basingstoke?

Not one ounce of decency in her. If you think you can hide on the backbench's and come back Maria, I don't want you to represent Basingstoke.

You are all that is bad in Parliament…. no, you won't get any sympathy from the vast majority either. No doubt David Cameron will have you elevated to a made up position in the Lords. Good grief!! And you probably will get to keep your ill-gotten gains.

Eventually she does the 'Honourable' thing. If that is the right word in her case.
Now she needs to go completely, never to return to her first, err second home, err occasional residence in Basingstoke.

And still the Gazette put a one day old traffic story in front her resignation story. Amazing.

This has not been a witch hunt. Maria Miller did wrong - she exploited the expenses system for her own advantage - anyone else would have been sacked, lost their pension, gone to jail ( as some MP's have). Resigning is only the start of what she needs to do. She needs to pay back the full amount determined by the commissioner, she should resign as Mp and let her constituents decide her future. On a wider front, MP's cannot continue to decide on these matters. A recall system must be put in place to make MP's directly accountable to the voters - perhaps then we would get MP's who have high moral standards and understand what is right and what is wrong. That's the nub of all this - not a witch hunt - simply she did wrong and must pay for it. Then, of course there is the blatant, uncomprehending arrogance of the so - called "apology" which was more about being sorry she had been caught than regretful about what she has done. Resign now from being an MP and put your trust in your constituents if you still believe you are innocent, Mrs Miller

Give the remaining £39K you owe to a Basingstoke based charity - it will take some of the shame you have brought to our town away...

AT LAST !.....and sadly, once again...at an horrendous expense to the tax payer..

I fully support the People of Basingstoke even though I do not live there

I support you all because none of us wherever we live should have to be discluded from our Human Rights jas a direct result of MP's Political obsession and personal financial greed

I wonder if Ms Miller will now apply for Job Seekers Allowance and, if so, she needs to go through the same appalling struggle that the REAL People face and have faced since the Conservatives came to Government

The time has come now for an Independent Watchdog to look again at all the Constituents that asked Ms Miller for help and had to sit around and wait for Maria to "sing her own songs elsewhere"

Maria Miller need to be Voted out now by all Basingstoke Councillors via an Emergency Referendum

The Code of Conducts CAN be applied and then hopefully Basingstoke can get the honest, caring and loyal MP that the People pay them for

I'm not celebrating yet. To me this is only the beginning.

All the interviews I've seen this morning, they still talk about her being cleared, they still talk about £5800, they still don't get it! Maria Miller is a symptom of something much bigger She was protected by David Cameron and many others, the original findings of an independent enquiry were overturned by MP's. The arrogance of them all thinking we could be hoodwinked!

We, the masses who do the work, suffer pay cuts and pay freezes while the people at the top are paid (or take) more and more.

We the masses are punished for taking more than we are entitled to, Maria Miller takes £90,000 that she shouldn't and it's 'a mistake'!

One rule for us and another for them!

There is a long way to go.

You can expense the stamp on your resignation letter.
You will be getting an 11% pay rise next year.

Mind you that could all change if the good people of Basingstoke rightly hound you out of office

However, friends in the local Conservative Party have told me that they are angry about this and are considering deselecting her.

The Prime Minister with all his bluster cannot adequately explain the actions of Maria Miller, she is an embarrassment.
• to Conservative voters
• to ordinary decent, honest, law-abiding citizens
• to her Party
• to Basingstoke.
Poor Basingstoke is being bashed because most people believe we believe in her. I think I'm right in saying: "We Don't."
If she wishes to brazen to out I'm sure the Electorate will vote in the correct manner and she will be gone. It would however be better for Basingstoke if they got a more honourable candidate NOW.
I hope Basingstoke and Deane will show their utter contempt at the Ballot Box. It's a pity they will have to wait this long. But Maria Miller has scandalised Parliament, Expenses and poor Basingstoke, to whom she purports to represent (albeit from WIMBLEDON) where her real home is. I don't think she has breezed away from this mess either. I hope there will be a Police investigation.

Donating her severance pay to charity? Big Deal! On the contrary madam keep your severance pay and give back the full £45,800 you were recommended to do until a lily-livered 'parliamentary expenses committee' quibbled and ummed-and-arred and let you go paying back only £5,800. If I was a Basingstoke charity being offered your severance pay by way of donation I'd say "No thanks it's tainted!".

So ... we needn't hold our breath.

How can any Basingstoke charity dare except any 'tainted severance donation' offered by this despicable madam? Methinks, this 'donation' could have accountable implications re tax, etc. on her other gains so as to limit her overall liabilities accountable to the exchequer because she will be able to log that she has given such-and-such to charity. Myself, not being a 'clever accountant' – don't we understand that cynical charitable giving downgrades, come April, one's taxable total? In any case, by donating severance (pension) she's giving away a sizeable proportion of an amount that the tax payer paid into that severance. I.e. she's giving our money without our permission. No! Give your severance, madam, back to the exchequer and donate, if you really care, to a Basingstoke charity with your own 'untainted accounting' (if you are able to account any)!

I still cannot get my head around that she was cleared of fraud for inadvertently claiming too much on her mortgage but was savvy enough to stop claiming immediately when the expense scandal of flipping houses became public knowledge but then told to pay back £45,000?
Sounds like she WAS found guilty by the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.
Then the MP's committee reduced it to £5800 .
Seems like criminals being allowed to judge a fellow criminal and basically letting Miller off.
