Last week I enjoyed a blast from the past in the form of Salt and Shake crisps. I used to love digging around in the bag to find the little blue envelope, carefully tearing it, and sprinkling the salt all over the otherwise plain crisps to make them taste great!

‘You are the salt of the earth’ Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:13.

As Christians we could think of ourselves as the contents of that little blue envelope, and the world as the crisps. Jesus asks us to go and make a difference. What a privilege, and what a responsibility he has entrusted upon us!

But you know, if we are to take this seriously, we need to recognise that whilst the salt is kept inside the envelope, its flavour is useless. It needs to get out and mix with the crisps!

We cannot hope to make a difference unless we get ourselves out of the envelope (could this even be our churches?) and start engaging with people.

Get out, go, and be salty!
