JUST over two weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending and reporting on the A Place To Be Proud Of Awards.

The scheme celebrates the many individuals and organisations that make Basingstoke the great town it is today, and there were many worthy winners and nominees.

But there was one moment that stood out from all the rest - when Mike Wilson took to the stage.

Mike collected the Judges’ Special Award on behalf of the Hope for Jayden campaign.

As he struggled to keep his emotions in check, members of the audience stood up, one by one, to pay tribute to him and his family’s efforts.

Regular readers will know of Mike’s story.

He is raising money for Naomi House children’s hospice following the death of his five-year-old son Jayden last year.

Mike became a worldwide hit when a video, showing Mike acting as Spider-Man as a birthday surprise for Jayden, went viral.

As we report on page three of today’s paper, Mike has produced The Amazing SpiderDad, a longer film in tribute to his son.

Although humourous, one cannot help but feel moved by the home family videos that play at the end of the film, showing a happy Jayden.

The aim for the video is simple – to raise as much money for Naomi House as possible.

For every person that views the film, money will be donated to the charity.

It is easy to find - simply search for the film’s title on YouTube, or look for the story on our website.

The Gazette would ask that readers find five minutes of their time to support such a worthy cause.
