AN ELDERLY horse had to be rescued by Basingstoke firefighters yesterday after falling into an icy ditch.

It is thought that Velvet, a 32-year-old New Forest mare, who lives on a farm in Goddards Lane, Sherfield-on-Loddon, had been trapped in the water-filled ditch for several hours before the alarm was raised at around 11am.

Fire crews and animal rescue advisers from Basingstoke and Eastleigh were called to the scene, where they spent around one hour working with the RSPCA and a vet to prepare the freezing and exhausted horse for rescue.

Brambles and foliage were removed from the surrounding area and Velvet was eventually lifted out of the ditch, which was five to six-feet deep.

Rural safety officer Anton Phillips, who co-ordinated the rescue, said: "The horse was very elderly and stiff, as she had been in the water for several hours. Her owner was also very distressed.

"Three firefighters went into the ditch wearing dry suits as the water, which went up to their knees, was incredibly cold.

"It was a dangerous job. The horse weighed around 350kg - more than the weight of three men.

"Velvet was beginning to suffer from hypothermia and as soon as she was out we covered her in blankets to keep her warm. She was soon back on her feet.

"When you consider that, in human terms, Velvet is about 80 years old, this was an excellent result."

Mr Phillips said it appeared that Velvet had stumbled through a hedge before falling into the ditch but he was confident that she would be none the worse for her ordeal.

Excellent use of local tax payers money. So that's where my £170 a month goes.

Stunned at the blinkered view mentioned above. Get a grip.

Well done Hampshire Fire and Rescue - it's comforting to know that we have the leading team in the country when it comes to dealing with equine incidents.

Well done to everyone that helped this animals though its frighting ordeal. I run a horse and live stock rescue and we see so many animals mainly horses that go though so much though thier lives, stavation, beatings and general stupidness of people not caring that storys like this make me smile. Rather than taking the out look that its old put it down that knowing this animal is scared needs help and recieved it is very nice. Would you leave an oap to die in a cold frightning ditch? animals are no different they feel fear, pain and gratittude. I hope this horse has no lasting effects from her fall and may she enjoy her retirement. Oh and bob from popley your money goes EVERY month on wasting the trouble most of the young generation causes in basingstoke. Everyone remeber the the horses that kids decided to set fire to there tails at a riding school 10 years ago? Maybe people more help to people to understand animals could be used then the fire servive wouldnt need to be called because there would be alot more volunteers how could of helped this distressed animal.

I'll be very pleased that Hampshire Fire and Animal Rescue Brigade saved the horse, but only if they send the bill to the owner.

Ky, can you post again please but do us a favour and write it in English next time.

Bob, how do you know that the owner wasn't billed for this?

I suspect they were - these days when cats are rescued from trees/whatever they've managed to get stuck in/on, and the owner can be traced, they get a bill...

What a nice and heart-warming story, great job guys. It makes me happy to see there are compassionate people helping animals and also supporting those that do help. I hope the fence/hedge is repaired so this does not happen again. Oh, and Bob - if the owner is not billed then I am happy to send a cheque to the Fire crew and RSPCA to cover this work if it will help change your attitude towards animal welfare & rescue.

Hi MIke

I have to ask, what brings you to this little corner of southern england?

Cheers

A question, if your house is burning down would you be so sympathetic to the horses needs? Not to worry, you lost home, but the horse is recovering well.

Firemen every where your underpaid for the risks involved but I am sure I speak for all when I say your deeply appreciated and keep up the good work no matter what form it comes in. Stay safe

Basingstoke fire dept is trained to rescue animals, they are one of the only units to do so in the south and they proved that just before christmas when they attended an accident on the M3.
And if your house is burning down then they do have other units to attend, whats wrong with people, should worried about other things in B & D like the Warden issue, Neighbour Care issue, lack of housing and the fact this Tory council want to spend £100000 on a image consultant.
Yes I agree the fireman are underpaid, so are police officers, nurses and me!!

Hi Carlos,

I lived in and around B'stoke for many years but I still have ties so I try and stay informed on local news and issues.

Best regards, Mike.

Carl, a house and its contents are just THINGS...THINGS can be replaced. Horses and other animals (including humans, by the way) cannot be replaced, they are BEINGS and each one is unique.
That's the second such comment on here, it's not like the horse fell in the ditch deliberately for goodness sake. Oh yes, and I'm underpaid too, there are a lot of us about!!

Karen,
That is a truly ridiculous comment.
Just things, these THINGS to which you refer are part of your family history. Photos of your children, long before the days of digital cameras. Gifts handed down through generations. Your childs first tooth, first lock of hair.
THINGS with no sentimental value what so ever. How can you replace your childs first lock of hair, How can replace photos of you with your departed grandparents. Tell this to families that have lost everything.
Still they are only THINGS they can be replaced. What a simple life you must lead. Underpaid, it's only money after all can it be replaced?

Don't suppose anyone's still reading this post, nevertheless, I must say to equate THINGS of sentimental value to that of a living, breathing creature is preposterous. Get your priorities right, Carl.
