Two burglars fled after they were confronted by police officers in an office building at Haberdashers' Aske's Boys School in Elstree on Saturday.
The men caused around £1,000 worth of damage by smashing doors, windows and filing cabinets, after breaking into the building at around 2.15pm.
Police were alerted by an alarm at the school, in Butterfly Lane, and the burglars smashed a window to escape when officers arrived at the scene.
The first burglar was described as white, aged in his mid-20s, and he wore a dark blue jacket and light trousers. The second was also white, aged in his mid-20s, and he wore a football-style top with a Nike logo and a black jacket with a white logo on the back.
