North West Hampshire MP Sir George Young has been appointed the new Government chief whip.

The veteran Sir George, first elected in 1974, will replace Andrew Mitchell MP, who resigned from the post this evening after the row about what he said to Downing Street policemen.

Sir George, 71, was Leader of the House of Commons until the Cabinet reshuffle last month. Sir George has previously held several Government posts and between 1995 and 1997, he was Secretary of State for Transport.
