Car transporter spills load on A34 near Whitchurch

MOTORISTS faced travel chaos this morning after a coach fire and car transporter crash caused long delays on Hampshire’s roads.
At 11.11pm last night, a loaded car transporter came loose from a recovery vehicle, which was heading towards Bullington Cross, and crashed into the central reservation of the A34 near Whitchurch.
The transporter’s load of Range Rovers spilt over both sides of the carriageway. No other vehicles were involved in the crash and nobody was injured.
The road is expected to remain closed in both directions until this afternoon while engineers repair the road surface and barriers on the central reservation.
The crash has caused extensive delays around the A34, which were compounded by a coach fire at 6.30am this morning on the northbound carriageway of the M3, between junctions 9 and 8.
All lanes have now reopened but queues of up to 45 minutes remain. Two crews from Basingstoke fire station went to help extinguish the fire.
A 29-year-old man, who drove the recovery vehicle in the A34 incident, has been arrested by police on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving with an insecure load and causing danger to other road users.
Officers have appealed for any witnesses to the A34 incident to contact Police Sergeant Lyndon Barrett, at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit, on 101, quoting Operation Bodmin.
