PRIMARY school pupils in the Basingstoke area have benefited from the generosity of shoppers who took part in a supermarket campaign.

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller, who is also Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, took time out from her busy schedule as a new member of the Government’s Cabinet to meet children from four Basingstoke schools at Tesco in Chineham Shopping Centre.

The visit was part of Tesco for Schools and Clubs scheme, which enables UK schools and clubs to redeem vouchers collected by the supermarket’s customers to buy products such as iMacs, drum kits, garden tools and sports equipment.

The scheme is now in its 21st year, and has provided more than 45,000 schools and clubs with over £185million worth of equipment.

This year, shoppers in Basingstoke received vouchers during a 10-week period, which they could donate to a school or club of their choice. Schools could then select equipment from a catalogue.

Children from Marnel Community Infant School, Four Lanes Infant School, Great Binfields Primary School and Marnel Community Junior School visited the Chineham store to meet Mrs Miller and collect their equipment.

Store manager Paul Cavaliere said: “Tesco for Schools and Clubs is a scheme which my team are proud to be part of.

“Thousands of customers have been collecting vouchers to help their local schools and clubs to get new equipment, showing what can happen when a whole community gets involved.”
