BASINGSTOKE is set to get another supermarket as low-price retailer Lidl looks to open a second store in the town.

Lidl is aiming to take up one of two new retail units in Gastons Wood, off the A33 near Chineham.

As previously reported in The Gazette , Centurion Properties and Scottish Widows Investment Partnership has been granted outline planning permission for the conversion of Impact and Isis House from offices into retail units.

A new planning application has been submitted with more detail of how the units will look, and with a request to make changes to the number of car and cycle parking spaces that were previously approved.

The application reads: “The scheme is for the construction of two retail units. One unit is a food store to be occupied by Lidl. The second is for a non-food store to be occupied by Dunelm Mill, and includes a mezzanine floor.”

Dunelm Mill, which sells homeware products like curtains and cushions, has 127 stores around the UK. It will take the larger unit which is in excess of 2,000 square metres. The Lidl store will be 1,458sqm.

Clare Norman, PR manager at Lidl, said the firm’s store, in Worting Road, South Ham, would remain open despite the new plan, but she could not yet say how many jobs the new site will create.

She said: “Lidl are working with Centurion Properties to deliver a second Lidl store in Basingstoke. We look forward to providing Basingstoke residents with greater access to our range of high-quality goods at everyday low prices.”
