Image of suspect from theft at Sainsbury's in Basingstoke

POLICE have released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to in connection with a theft at a Basingstoke supermarket.

Shortly before 10.30am on Saturday, September 8, a man used the cash machine outside Sainsbury ’s in Hatch Warren, Basingstoke, to withdraw some money. However, he walked away before taking his cash from the machine.

When he realised his mistake, he went back to the machine but the money had gone.

Police officers say that CCTV footage from the shop appears to show a man who was near the cash machine when the man made his transaction, taking the money from the machine and not making any attempt to give it back to the victim.

The man is then seen to walk off towards the bus stop.

PC Glen Spierling said: “This seems to have been an opportunistic theft; the man seen taking the money did have an opportunity to call out to the victim, but did not.

“Saturday mornings are usually very busy at this location so someone may have seen something or may recognise the man in this CCTV image.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC Spierling at Basingstoke Police Station on 101 or call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where information can be left anonymously.

Personally I would have got it to the rightful owner if I was in this mans position, thats my honest answer.

On the other hand you have got to lay the blame at the Idiots hands who done the transaction and then walked off without taking his own money. He should take it on the chin and accept he has been a doughnut!

It's unfortunate that dishonest and selfish people now out-number the good.

It just seems that way because the times when people chase after the rightful owners to reunite them them with their cash are not reported.
But you are not the only one to have this opinion - the lost property offices of train and bus companies are full of valuables which honest people have handed in but remain unclaimed by the owners because they share your jaundiced view of society.

I found someone's bank card lying in the street; called up their bank and had it cancelled for them. Found a rail travel pass in similar circumstances, it didn't contain anything other than the pass, so I handed that in at the station. I've found cash lying around in car parks, on verges, and the pavement, which I've pocketed. If I saw some cash in a cash machine, unclaimed, I'd take it if I thought I'd get away with it. If I couldn't get away with it I'd flag a staff member or leave it and let someone else deal with it.

What has this world come to? If you are behind someone in the queue for the ATM and you see they have left the money or card, why the hell wouldn't you call out to them? EVERYONE makes mistakes and if someone has a memory problem, that is also not their fault so why should they pay for dementia/altzheimers
/short memory/Amnesia by dishing out their own cash to dishonest members of the public?! It may have been his last bit of money to get groceries with and he may have gone home and cried about it. What if you were a fly on the wall at his house, would you all be laughing and rubbing your hands together? It is theft however you look at it! If someone fraudulently withdrew money from someones bank account they'd be arrested, sadly this man did the transaction on the machine so did the hard bit for the theif! Hope they catch him.

I was once given £5 too much change in Sainsbury's, knowing the member of staff could lose her job I handed it back, "thank you she said, I believe in karma and you will be rewarded" I was I won £260 on the local football sweep the following week. Lets hope this theif get's his reward.

Always treat other people how you would like to be treated. Have a bit of respect for others and think how you would feel if it happened to you. What goes around....comes around....yes, Karma

OK Mrs G no need to milk it :D

It is down right dishonest, morally wrong and who ever pocketed the cash should be ashamed and guilt ridden. However as they said this was probably an opportunist whom I hope is sat at home thinking abouthis/her actions.
