Tory group leader comes under fire over claims of a deeply divided party

A CONSERVATIVE borough councillor has said the ruling Tory group is “massively divided” – and he claims its leader “needs to get a grip”.

Tadley Central ward member Stephen West claims the ruling administration, which has a wafer-thin majority, is in danger of collapsing over deeply-held divisions about future council policy.

However, Conservative group and council leader Cllr Clive Sanders has rejected the criticism, and he has said Cllr West’s absence from the area for the last two months means he “may not be completely up to speed with everything that is happening.”

Cllr West told The Gazette : “Cllr Sanders has just a short time to get a grip, not just of the council’s strategy, but of his Cabinet.

“I recall the endless Conservative group meetings that I have sat in where many of us were urged to ‘pull together’ amidst thinly-veiled threats of being demoted or ostracised.”

The outspoken claims come in the same month that crucial decisions on the borough’s Core Strategy – a blueprint of future housing development for the next 15 years – are set to take place.

Last year, the Conservative-led blueprint was scrapped after it was labelled “irrational” and “unlawful” by a High Court judge after the council-owned Manydown land was excluded from the debate over future housing sites.

And in May this year, internal divisions over the Core Strategy, and the Conservatives refusal to include land at Manydown for housing, prompted Old Basing councillor Onnalee Cubitt to quit the party and become an independent. Her decision reduced the Conservatives’ grip on power to one.

Cllr West claimed that Conservative members are being increasingly forced to “toe the party line” during closed-door group meetings, and are unable to air their concerns.

He said: “The party is massively divided. We have a group of 30, and 10 are in the Cabinet. They make the decisions and we are expected to follow.”

Speaking to The Gazette, Cllr Sanders said: “Cllr West has been away for the last two months helping with the Olympics so may not be completely up to speed with everything that is happening.

“Far from being on hold, work is advancing rapidly on developing a revised Local Plan and on developing plans for the future of Manydown, both starting their way through committee now and due for consultation in the next few months.”

Cllr Sanders added: “We are determined to ensure that the borough is open for new exciting opportunities. This clearly demonstrates that we have a very firm grip on the borough’s priorities, taking positive actions and involving as many people as possible in take them forward.”

I fear this was inevitable after the majority was cut to one. It's now safe for a cllr to say what they believe knowing full well they won't suffer the same fate as Phil Heath because if they kick them out they go back into opposition and they have to start listening to the people again rather than saying "we listen, now let us do what we want and stop telling us we're wrong".... Time for them to do what they were elected to do but as they haven't listened, well we have had a flavour of things to come.

After the Manydown fiasco the Tories in Basingstoke know they are finished. The Political landscape is about to change in the whole of the UK. People are totally fed up with the same old cronnies running their Councils. Labour have made headway again and some people have a very short memory.
Lib Dems are now affected by the National events and are pretty much a non party. Many Lib Dem candidates don't even have the bottle to stand under their own flag instead playing the independant flag.
So the rise of anti EU parties who are the 2nd biggest party representing the UK in Europe UKIP polled 15% in the last election and are constantly above Lib dems now. Time for change locally

Labour, LibDems and Tories politicians nationally are completely out of touch with ordinary people and those that are in touch, are told to toe the line or face the consequences. This is perfectly evidenced by our own MP Maria Miller, who does not seem able to decide if she is for or against anything apart from what the last person told her she is for or against.

In reality we are being governed by a small clique of rich ex.public school boys, the majority of which have never had a proper job in their lives, let alone run a business. This applies to Lib, Lab and Con and they will do their level best to keep it that way, if you haven't noticed that in recent years, then you are blind, deaf and dumb.

Probably not the case on a local councillors level where the majority, out of feelings of public duty, honourably serve their electorate. Its a shame then that Basingstoke has in recent years begun to take on the same failing of those that are supposed but don't represent us in parliament.

There is no doubt the Manydown puzzle needs looking into, something not quite right there. Perhaps, who knows, when someone has the nerve to open that can of worms, more unopened cans will be found.

As it is I swore I would never vote Labour again after they were so sycophantically stupid to follow and support that war criminal Tony Blair into Iraq and kill, main and injure thousands, some say a million. The Conservatives promised a referendum on our membership of the EU then reneged on that promise once they were in power and even then tried to convince people they had said nothing of the sort, liars. Then you have the LibDems, well they are just a waste of space as evidenced by their lily-livered leaders grovelling apology for not delivering on something he knew he could never deliver on but then shock horror he actually got the chance of being in a position of power. Didn't reckon on that did he.
