GROWERS got a chance to show off their prize produce at the Old Basing and Lychpit Village Show.

Scores of people came to the village hall, in Newnham Lane, last Sunday for the annual event.

Judges ran the rule over 100 categories, which ranged from best cucumber to best home brew. There were nine categories for children and a home brew section, where tipples included parsnip wine, sloe brandy and mead.

For the 21th year running, show chairman Jeff Owen won the Bolton Cup, awarded to the competitor who scores the most points across all the categories.

He told The Gazette : “It’s quite competitive and some people really do try to up their game. There is lady called Margaret Brace who has been trying to beat me with her dahlias for years, and she did it this year, and she’s chuffed to bits.

“We didn’t expect the show to be quite as good this year as it has been, because of all the rain. But it has been a good turn-out.”
