Bid to extend Cross Barn in Odiham

CHANGES are planned for a community hall in Odiham, said to be the oldest brick-built barn in Hampshire.
Hugh Sheppard, chairman of the management committee of Cross Barn, has applied to Hart District Council to extend the hall so that it can have a storeroom for tables and chairs.
The plan also includes a bricked-up doorway to be reinstated as a fire escape, and access created for the proposed storeroom.
The hall, a Grade II-listed building that dates back to 1532, is used by groups in the village, for private functions and the village’s monthly cinema evening.
In the application, Mr Sheppard said that currently equipment is kept in the main hall with tables and chairs.
He added: “This denies or compromises hall-hire for various bookings because of restrictions on useable space. The management has no doubt that this is a constraint on the financial viability of the hall.”
English Heritage, as well as Odiham Parish Council and Hart’s conservation officer, will be consulted on the plan.
Hart will decide on the application by Tuesday, October 16.
