Winklebury Carnival is smash-hit success
12:00pm Tuesday 14th August 2012 in Local
THERE was a real carnival atmosphere as people of all ages turned out to support an annual event in a Basingstoke community.
Organisers have said that this year’s Winklebury Carnival was one of the most successful to date.
The event raised £800 to support the Winklebury Youth Project, and more money is still being collected.
The carnival featured a colourful parade, with children lining the streets in fancy dress, and there were a variety of stalls. Entertainment was also provided by magician Tony Spanetti, and there was a raffle, both of which were funded by Sentinel Housing Association.
The youth project is an important part of the community, with at least 40 children attending every week. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council , which provides all the equipment that the children use in the youth project, also supported the carnival.
Lea Jeff, chairwoman of the Winklebury Carnival committee, said: “The carnival was an unforgettable day for the community. It was great for them to come out and support us, and for us to support them at the same time.
“Its success means we can keep the Winklebury Youth Project open free of charge for another year.
“The project is an important part of the community as it gives the children a safe place to hang out, where they can have fun and not be bothered.”
