Robbery in Eastrop Park

A MAN was robbed as he walked through a Basingstoke park.

The incident took place as the 23-year-old victim walked along a footpath in Eastrop Park, heading towards the Riverdene estate at 11.30pm on Tuesday, July 17.

A man tried to grab his bag, and while they struggled, a second man punched the victim to the back of the head, causing him to fall to the ground and let go of the bag.

It contained a black Apple iPad, a blue Samsung Galaxy s3 mobile phone and two text books.

Both robbers made off towards Festival Place .

One is described as black, around 20-year-old, wore a dark-coloured cap with a white peak and had a dark handkerchief over the lower part of his face.

The second attacker is described as white, around 6ft tall and aged between 18 and 22.

Detective Constable Jo Blanchard said: “This was a completely unprovoked incident where a young man has had his belonging stolen in a violent way.”

Three men, all from the Basingstoke area, were arrested in connection with this incident but have since been released without charge.

Anyone with information can contact DC Blanchard, at Basingstoke police station, on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

We are told crime is falling, but violent unprovoked attacks seem to reported on nearly every week. Is Basingstoke still a safe town or is violent crime increasing?

Well there you have it, an apple a day does not keep the doctor away. I guess the offenders were hungry to take both and apple and a galaxy.

Look on the bright side, they will both be obsolete by the time the crooks try and flog them via the usual Basingstoke fence on Facebay.

there will be more and more of this as things get worse, unemployment, people having benefits denied and withdrawn, homelessness. With the current Government, the future is not bright, it is frightening. Also of course, we have no evening buses, so people are forced to walk home. It is not safe. I worry about walking in secluded areas even in daylight. I would not contemplate walking home late at night, unfortunately a lot of people have to because they work shifts, cannot afford to run a car or get a taxi. The people who make the cuts and the decisions to cut public transport etc are not the ones who suffer, they just don't care!!

englishrose_uk I do not have much sympathy with the view that, 'I am out of work, short of money and homeless and my only way out is to turn to crime.' Nor do I think the current Government is any more to blame than the last was or the next will be - not until we get a fair voting system when Governments can be held to account. How can a Government that nobody voted for be held accountable for anything?
The victim was not forced to walk home unless the bus was cancelled at the last minute. We all have to plan around available transport. Perhaps the victim would not have taken the bus even if it had been available.
Of course the assualt was awful and should not have happened but let us consider what the victim could have done to protect himself:
1 He could have walked home along a well lit street. Why use the park?
2 He could have taken a taxi. He had an iPad and Galaxy S3 phone, so surely he could afford a taxi.
3 He could have planned his evening so that he could walk home with friends.
The statistics show that young men are the target for this type of crime more than any other group. This is because they are likely to be carrying expensive phones and toys and they put themselves at risk by not taking steps to avoid danger.
