£50,000 of National Lottery funding secured
THE sport pavilion in Silchester is set for a huge overhaul after the parish council secured nearly £50,000 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the 30-year-old building.
The £49,959 has come from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities Fund and is for improvements to the pavilion, which is home to both the village football and cricket teams. The improvements will include a new changing room, new showers, a better roof and an expanded club room.
It is hoped that these works will boost the building’s potential as a social and community asset for the village. Silchester Parish Council chairman Steve Spillane said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment, which means we can upgrade the quality of our premises to match the enthusiasm and quality of our local teams.”
The current building was constructed in 1982 and, despite the valiant efforts of local volunteers, it has suffered from lack of funds for a number of years.
The Inspired Facilities fund is investing £50million of National Lottery money into community sport projects between 2011 and 2014. The fund is part of the £135million Olympic legacy programme and each sports facility that receives funding will carry the London 2012 Inspire mark. Sport England’s chairman Richard Lewis said: “This fund has really hit the mark with sports clubs in the South. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want.”
