Derailed train causes delays

RAIL passengers travelling to Basingstoke, Overton and Whitchurch were delayed yesterday after a train came off the track near Andover.

The engineering train derailed between Andover and Grately at around 3pm, resulting in busses replacing some trains between Salisbury and Basingstoke.

No one was hurt in the incident, but Hassard Stacpoole, communications project manager for Stagecoach Group, told The Gazette this morning that the cause is now being investigated.

Other trains were diverted and did not call at Andover, Whitchurch or Overton, resulting in journey times extended by up to 40 minutes.

The line re-opened at 5pm.

Mr Stacpoole described the incident as a “minor disruption” adding: “No one was hurt, the damage was minimal and we are looking into the cause of this.”
