Man detained after police incident

A LARGE part of Basingstoke town centre was closed last night after a man was spotted on the edge of a multi-storey car park.

Officers were called to Basingstoke bus station at 8.30pm to reports of a man on the top floor of the Festival Place car park.

They closed Churchill Way and the bus station to traffic, as well as the footbridge between Alencon Link and the bus station, while they negotiated with the 36-year-old man.

He came down at 10.10pm and was detained under the powers of the Mental Health Act.

All roads have since reopened.
