The scene of the crash
FIVE people were seriously injured in a head-on crash that led to the closure of the A33 Reading Road at Chineham.
The collision occurred just before 4pm yesterday near the junction with Whitmarsh Lane and involved a black BMW M3 travelling northbound and a black Ford Galaxy travelling southbound.
The driver of the M3, a 33-year-old woman from Hook, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Four people in the Galaxy – a 46-year-old man and a 45-year-old woman from Hedge End, and a 56-year-old man and 85-year-old woman from Southampton – sustained serious injuries. The 85-year-old woman is said to be in a life-threatening condition at Basingstoke hospital.
Two boys aged seven and 10 travelling in the rear of the Galaxy received minor injuries.
All the seriously injured were taken to hospitals around Hampshire.
Officers closed the road for four hours to investigate the scene and clear the wreckages.
They are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact PC John Bownes at Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Gisborne.
