Tidy up before torch arrives

IT WILL be an historic occasion, and ahead of the Olympic torch coming through Basingstoke, Keep Britain Tidy is urging people to get involved in tidying up the community.

The charity is calling on everyone to get “swept up” in the Olympics fever by making sure footpaths, parks and playing fields are litter-free when the torch passes through the town on Wednesday, July 11.

The plea is part of the national summer clean-up, Show the World, which aims to highlight the importance of keeping the country litter-free at a time when billions of people around the world will be tuning in to watch the Olympic Games.

The flame arrived in England on May 19 and is being carried by 8,000 torchbearers through villages, towns and cities across the UK before arriving at its final destination at London’s Olympic Stadium on Friday 27 July.

Phil Barton, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy, said: “Each year, it costs council taxpayers £885million to keep our streets clean.

“If everyone properly disposed of their rubbish instead of tossing it in the gutter, this money could be spent on improving education and healthcare.

“Whether you can spare 10 minutes or an hour, every piece of litter you pick up will help us to show the world we care about the communities we live in.”

Residents who want to get involved can do solo clean-ups or get friends, family and their community involved.

To register and order a Big Tidy Up kit, complete with tabards, refuse sacks and limited-edition Show the World wristbands, please visit www.lovewhereyoulive.org/showtheworld. Orders take approximately seven days to be processed.

I wonder how much 'healthcare', 'education', and - for that matter - 'street cleaning' we could buy with the obscene amount of money being wasted on the Olympics?
Here, here!!

Littering is illegal I believe. A few people being fined for littering and having their names published in the local paper might serve as a deterrent. I can't remember any reports of fines for littering in Basingstoke yet there's a lot of it going on daily.

...clearing up after the lazy, filthy morons who assume it's perfectly OK to deliberately drop litter wherever they please!

"When it comes to spending over 800 million pounds on an opening ceremony alone ..." Indeed! The funniest comment I've come across was from someone who, having seen the mock-up on the TV, said: "We could have held that in a real field and saved a fortune"!! Anyhoo - can anyone point me to where I can find out exactly where the torch relay will be in Bas? Ta!

If the organisers were so concerned with creating a nice image of the UK why did they choose the route they have? The opening ceremony is recreating a typical (some may say idyllic) British countryside but the torch is being carried to the MacDonalds carpark.
Or perhaps they are suggesting that Basingstoke and the wider UK is depicted best by such landmarks.

Ahhhh McDonalds, are they not a major sponsor of the Olympics? I am surprised they are only passing by two of the three in town.

I find basingstoke to be a clean well kept town.
The council teams seem to keep ahead of the few lazy morons who throw litter on the floor.

So are Visa, but I don't see them running around Chineham Business Park.

Being fair to McDonalds, I suspect many visitors to the games would love to find a MD's in the Olympic Village. At least they could eat *something* for a couple of quid, rather than an arm and a leg. Fortunately, as most normal people have been denied tickets, and won't be having to attempt the hideous trek through London, they can sit at home, watch it on telly with a milkshake, burger and fries. I'm lovin' it!

“the few lazy morons”, Wowzer, that’s high praise indeed ! Whenever I go to Basingstoke I find myself besieged by packs of mutant freaks; littering is subterranean when compared alongside their catalogue of criminality.

As far as the clown 'Ronald McDonald' is concerned, I wonder if he tastes a bit funny?
