Man robbed outside supermarket Man robbed outside supermarket

DETECTIVES investigating a robbery outside a Basingstoke supermarket have released CCTV pictures in a witness appeal.

The offence took place at about 8.30pm on Monday, May 7, as a 26-year-old man tried to use a cash machine outside ASDA, in Brighton Way, Brighton Hill.

The offender walked up to him, punched him in the head, took his wallet and removed £70 in cash before dropping the wallet.

He is described as white, aged in his late 20s, about 5ft 11ins tall and wore a white hooded top with the hood up and tracksuit bottoms.

Detective Constable Claire Chandler said: “Fortunately the victim wasn’t seriously injured as a result of this incident but it was a very brazen attack.

“The shop was closed at the time of the incident as it was a Bank Holiday, but it is believed there may have been people playing football in the car park at the time.”

Anyone with information can contact Basingstoke police station on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

I detect a hint of vindication, HC1.

ASDA - yet another place to avoid. This is ridiculous.

Thankfully it's uncommon enough to make a headline. But it's no worse than any other town of this size.

Again, I hope the victim is ok, people commenting keep forgetting the victims here!
I agree Bill1933, if you think about it, only bad news really gets the headlines in papers. The Gazette aren't going to say 'Breaking news! a flower bloomed near Eastrop Park!' or, 'Basingstoke resident wins £100 on the lottery'.....'Mr Smith has a lovely barbeque in his garden with friends and family'....I could go on.

You seriously lack intelligence if this was truly common it wouldn't make the paper... if you take all the headlines about this sort of thing in the last month that's what a weekend is like in a place like Peckham.

Only robbery I've seen is *inside* the store. Those prices keep going up and up.

Blimey this story had over 40 comments on yesterday now its in the 20's?!!
Basingstoke can't be that bad if they are having the Olympic torch go right through the Town Centre!! We wouldn't even get a mention if we were such an awful town!
I love Basingstoke!! God bless Basingstoke and all who sail in her!.....lol (I'm not being sarcastic, I genuinely love my home town and want to move BACK here one day!)

I'm not sure if I have my stories mixed up. Maybe it was the poor bloke that was attacked in an underpass, that story that had over 40 comments. I dunno.
Is their 2 Mayor Quimby's? one's real one's an imposter?

Basingstoke has an unfair reputation based on the London overspill. Yes, it has its rough areas, but there are plenty of nice parts too. Picture postcard England starts in Old Basing, and Lychpit, Kempshott, Black Dam, Kempshott and Kings Furlong are all decent places to live. Employment levels are high, and there are plenty of smaller towns than Basingstoke in a far worse state. Ok, so it's not perfect, but show me a large urban town that is!

Google most deprived areas I think it's the Telegraph have broken down 32.482 areas

Parts of Hatch Warren are in the top 100 least deprived

I know it's not Basingstoke but 2nd-10th least deprived areas are around Fleet and Cove so we obviously do live in a nice town and a nice part of the country.

so I you're right

Smaller towns in a worst state

Andover
Aldershot
Tadley
Havent
Waterlooville
Newbury
I thought I'd name a few local towns that are smaller and worst off. :D
