FOOTBALLERS turned out in force for a tournament that delivered a fundraising boost to a cancer charity.
A total of 24 teams took part in the five-a-side event at Down Grange, Basingstoke, to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.
It was the second year of the Merit Recruitment-organised tournament and organisers said it was bigger and better than the previous event.
Teams were split into two leagues of 12, with the top two progressing to the semi-finals. The winners of these then competed in a final to decide the overall champion, and a team from Basingstoke-based FI Information eventually came out on top.
Maria Nunes, managing director of Merit Recruitment, said: "The tournament went really well. We had more teams than last year and even had to turn down a few and put them on a waiting list because of the response we got.
"We raised £7,400 through entry fees alone and another £4,000 through collections and a raffle. Local companies were absolutely amazing in giving us raffle prizes and were a great help.
"Everyone is affected by cancer in some way, at some point in their lives, and we wanted to do something to help."
