KEEN gardeners had plenty to see and talk about at a renowned Basingstoke flower and vegetable show.

Fine specimens of cakes and crafts, flowers and vegetables were entered and judged as part of the 2010 Basingstoke Flower and Vegetable Show set in the beautiful Walled Garden, Basingstoke’s hidden treasure at Down Grange.

A steady stream of visitors popped along on a glorious afternoon to inspect the winners, listen to live music – courtesy of Basingstoke Concert Band Big Band – buy plants from Wolverton Plants and tuck into a cool ice cream.

Back again this year was the Gardeners’ Question Time Roadshow, consisting of a panel of experts who answered questions from the crowd and offered advice with a healthy dose of humour.

Speaking last Sunday, Philip Wraight, treasurer of the Walled Gardens Events Group, said: “The garden is wonderful and we have had over 400 people come, so it was a stonking good day!

“The sunshine helped although the weather over the last three months has not been helpful for growing entries. The show is open to everyone and is judged according to RHS guidelines.”

Cups were awarded for various categories, including flowers, floral arrangements, fruit, handicrafts, junior sections, and the overall best in show award went to Pete Trueman for his five coloured potatoes.

Mr Wraight, who is also vice-chairman and treasurer of Basingstoke Horticultural Society, said that the group took over organising this event, as well as an autumn show, from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council four years ago.

He said: “There’s a small group of volunteers, and Councillors Richard and Anne Court are the leading lights. We do have some problems getting exhibitors and are always looking for grants and sponsorship.”
