CRIME is going down across Hampshire last year, according to the latest figures published by the Home Office.
In the year from September 2008 to September 2009, there were more than 153,700 crimes across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, which was a drop of five per cent on the previous 12 months.
Towards the end of last year, The Gazette revealed how crime in Basingstoke had increased, despite positive figures reported across the county. The annual Basingstoke and Deane Community Safety Forum Strategic Assessment report showed robbery had risen by more than 45 per cent and burglary by more than 49 per cent between June 2008 and May 2009, compared with the same period in 2007 and 2008.
The Home Office figures do not include a breakdown for Basingstoke, but Hampshire Constabulary Chief Constable Alex Marshall said public confidence is rising across the county.
He added: “The majority of people believe the police and local councils are dealing with the issues which affect them.”
