Primary pupils put across their views

SCHOOLCHILDREN had plenty to talk about at a special conference about community life.

More than 100 primary school pupils took part in the event, hosted by Cranbourne Business and Enterprise College (CBEC), where Basingstoke MP Maria Miller was the guest of honour.

The youngsters, all members of their school councils, shared their ideas about how to improve the community life at their schools. The event was also designed to help ease their move from primary to secondary school.

Mrs Miller said that it was good to have a close relationship between schools, adding: “It’s such an important time in a child’s life, moving from primary to secondary school, and trying to help that transition is very important.”

Nine schools took part in the Student Voices Cluster Conference.

A group of Year 11 CBEC students hosted the event, which is in its third year.

Pupils spoke about life at their school, including fundraising appeals, before listening to talks about Destination Basingstoke, Fair Trade and the Stroke Association. Youngsters were then able to try out CBEC facilities, and one group used the modern art studios to design their own flags, while another took part in African rhythm and drumming sessions in the music rooms.

CBEC head teacher Betty Elkins said: “The thing that came across to me was just how good our students were.

“I was bowled over when one primary school teacher said that CBEC students were not just helping the younger pupils but also checking they were alright.”

During the day, parents, governors and teachers took part in a discussion about rights, respect and responsibilities, based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Kirstie-Anne Sangway, assistant head teacher of Manor Field Junior School in Brighton Hill, said: “We are going to take the ideas back to our own schools and see how we can make a difference.”

Richard Woodley, a PE teacher at CBEC, who organised the event, said that all the preparation in the lead-up to the event had been worthwhile, adding: “Our students were fantastic and the pupils who came along were a real credit to their schools.

“It was good to build relationships with the schools and school councils.”

MP Maria Miller was the guest of honour;
Emily Roberts put the dunce’s cap on and stand in the corner, our MP has no honour when it comes to schools and education.
When are you going to challenge her on the closure of Chineham Park Primary School?

What a scandal

Maria

I have a few words for you - Chineham Park School ...where were you when this school needed YOU?
All of this politiking to make yourself seem to be wonderful and school orientated.
Still no comment on THE school that needed your support though - you are a disgrace for an MP.

Nice to see the Tories following Labour's lead - hopefully they are being genuine about education and schools in particular, but do not count on it.

Maria at yet another primary school, the 2nd in as many weeks - you can tell it's election time. As all the other posts have mentioned, "Where were you when CPP needed you Maria?"...

"Mrs Miller said that it was good to have a close relationship between schools, adding: “It’s such an important time in a child’s life, moving from primary to secondary school, and trying to help that transition is very important.”

This just beggars belief. Roll on May.

Emily Roberts, Don’t sit waiting for an invite start asking her questions about the closure, her answers would be very educational.,
So come on Em give it a try, you know it makes sense, he who dares

Wouldn't it have been better to ask secondary school children a few questions?
Surely primary kids are usually interested in sweets and who they sit next to.

What an easy photo-shoot Maria, questions you could manage to answer all by yourself, without any help from tory head office.......

Chineham Park failed at the hands of a Labour Councillor, and it's good news for parents of decent kids who may have had to suffer being in it's catchment.

If you want Popley to improve as an area, you need to vote out those money grabbing, useless commies that only do the job to avoid real work.

David Cameron claims the new Tory REVOLUTION.
Public petitions to create new law, what joke, we can’t get our MP Maria Miller (Shadow spokesperson for Schools) to comment on the Chineham Park Schools closure,
in her our constituency.

What joke, I think Cameron’s using the same script writers as only Fools and Horses. Luverly Jubbly

David Cameron is talking about bringing 'elitism' into schools...where does that leave the majority?
Should those in the majority consider voting for a party that will in all likelihood exclude them in favour of those in the 'elite'?

It is the same old Tories.

I’ve compared Cameron to “only fools and horses” over his hilariously funny policies and after reading your posts “Trigger” comes to mind.
For all you only fools and horses fans, I do apologise if I have offended Trigger in any way.

Popley Rebel, you were (in your rather bizarre way) trying to associated Maria Miller with a failed Popley School. A Popley school where your local labour Councillor Andrew McCormick has sat as a governor for the last seven years. The rest of the town are able to see this, but as I guess you were educated in Popley you may think people are generally as stupid as you. Your Trigger reference fits you rather well ;-) Perhaps one day you'll get a job and get out of the house mate - You'd feel much better about yourself and less bitter towards folk that work and enjoy a modest standard of living. Still, with 'Education: Popley' on your CV, I don't hold out much hope.

That’s the problem we all have, Maria Miller MP and Shadow Spokesperson for Schools has disassociated herself from the school, and that bring us on to another avenue of debate.
For most of the time when the schools was in decline Maria Miller was our MP, therefore, one would expect her to show some concerns, when she became Shadow spokesperson for Schools her concerns should have turned to a priority of keeping up to speed on the progress of all schools in her constituency.
Sadly however, this did not happen and as a consequence she has run for cover, therefore, I’m glad you raised the new issue.

By the way, how many films did GANDHI make

Hey Tintinout

Quick word in your shell mate - I was raised in the Oakridge/Popley area. I went to school in the area..and I still live in the area.
I am now a management accountant, call me stupid then.....!!
If you disrespect an area you disrespect all - that is something you just don't get. Why do you think the Tories will NEVER be voted in around the Popley area. You are not liked or trusted. Chineham Park School just underlines our suspicions of the Tories.
It is becoming clear the problem the Tories have with Popley - hopefully ALL the residents come out on polling day and ensure any Tory candidate has a whipping. This is not about politics anymore, but Tory bigotry against Popley and its residents.

Basingstoke Town: Answer to your question - imagine how far you could have gone with a decent education - possibly further than your office job.

This is very much about politics and the failure of the local LABOUR councillor WHO WAS A GOVERNOR AT THE SCHOOL FOR SEVEN YEARS blaming everyone else for the failure. Still, when you are a bit simple like the dualing-bango politicians of Popley, you have trouble grasping this, so I have to pity your need to blame others for the failures of your local politicians, parents and children.

And Maria Miller as our MP has a duty in line with her post as ELECTED representative to give her opinion to her constituents when it is asked for. I believe that Andrew McCormick gave his - Tintinout ...where is Maria Millers?

You can rant and rave about the Labour party and Popley - have you ever lived in Popley? If not, how do you know its needs?
If we are talking about length of service - how long has Maria Miller been MP for Basingstoke?
You have been insulting to the residents of Popley and also disrespectful. If your views represent those of the Tory Party may I suggest you think twice about fielding a candidate in Popley. It will be interesting to find out what the residents have to say about this on the stump!!
I trust that you are also tarring those from Merton Rise and Marnel Park as well, I will be informing them as well come election time.....
Your immature rantings are those of an imbecile who should not be allowed anywhere near a political debate.

If you are going to slam a particular estate in the Basingstoke area, you have to slam all of the 'not so good ' areas in the town. What criteria do you use to meet your OWN personal standards?
I once heard a wonderful and powerful statement - 'in politics ours is NOT to judge but to make judgements'.
The Tories have forgotten their ONE NATION roots and have gone to a 'me first, me always, me forever' mentality.
In Basingstoke do the electorate want to be judge by where they live or have representatives who will represent them with dignity.
I for one will not stand for an area no matter where it is being derided for just being what it is - it is disrespectful, rude and undignified.

PopleyRebel says...

I can’t believe anyone could possibly support Maria Miller MP for not speaking out over the school closure. That said I believe Miller has inquired about the closure and has drawn the same conclusion as the parents, campaigners and supporters of the school that HCC has used dirty tricks to close the school, therefore, Millers silence would stop any embarrassment that would seriously jeopardise her position in the Tory Party.
Any schools closure raises concerns over the running of the school; however, in the case of Chineham Park School the closure has raised many issues involving HCC’s support for the school and the conduct of HCC during the closure procedure.
Therefore, Maria Miller MP and Shadow spokesperson for schools should put her consistency before her political ego and speak out.

It is interesting to see the Tories perspective of life, the world and everything in it - it is also scary , disturbing and reinforces the view of them still being the 'nasty' party of old.
What is funny is what actually comes out when you expose a person's or a party's true feelings. Tintinout 's views can only be replicated on to the Tories as he is one of their bloggers - and Maria Miller as she has been so evasive.
The Tories cried foul of Labour using class warfare tactics - they are using those very same tactics but from the top down instead.

To all the residents of Popley - including the new parts of Merton Rise and Marnel Park, I hope you all take notice of just how the Tories feel about Popley. Here is a part of the diatribe that came from a Tory blogger...

'You'd feel much better about yourself and less bitter towards folk that work and enjoy a modest standard of living. Still, with 'Education: Popley' on your CV, I don't hold out much hope........
I have to pity your need to blame others for the failures of your local politicians, parents and children.'

If these are the thoughts of the Tory Party about Popley - DO NOT think if you live in another area of Basingstoke that you are beyond their contempt and vitriol.
When exposed what they truly think is the same old bile from the elitism school.
Popley is just the start - the tip of the iceberg because we refuse to bow to the Tories.
Take a long hard look at the Tories and you will see through them.

To all Popley residents,
remember when Maria Miller MP (team leader) indorsed Zoe Wheddon as a Secondary School teacher in Popley West local election,
and it later emerged that ZOE was in fact a tutor at a very expensive private School; she was also named as one of Cameron’s want to be MPs.

Therefore, was Miller doing Cameron a favour or didn’t see know the difference between Secondary Schools and Private???

GC31 says...

Whilst I understand the frustration of those connected to Chineham Park, I also see the cold logic for closing the school and don't blame our MP for keeping her possibly unpopular opinions to herself. When it comes to the General Election I am sure people will be more concerned about getting rid of someone that claimed the credit for a booming economy for 10 years and then went all slopey shouldered when it went wrong (oh and don't mention the war!). I could never stand that pompous Andrew Hunter bloke and voted for Tony Blair, but MM seems pretty decent. The Head of Chineham Park was clearly incompetent and to get rid of a school with such low class sizes is clearly in the best interests of the taxpayer. Also, why react to Tintinout? That is what he wants, just laugh, ignore it and he will go away!

basingstoketown says...
11:51pm Fri 12 Feb 10

If your constituents ask for your opinion it should be given, you are there to represent them as their MP. This fundamental basis of being an MP seems to not include Maria Miller.

PopleyRebel says...
9:00am Sat 13 Feb 10

If the head teacher at Chineham Park was incompetent then what does say about HCC Education Authorities, it took them eight years to work that out.
what a load of crap.
As for Miller, her silence is golden (for the Tories) she would become a liability if truth ever got out, she claims the school closure is to complex for the public to understand in her short column, “what a cop out”

We need an inquiry

GC31 says...
11:34pm Sat 13 Feb 10

I agree that she should say something, but I can see why she isn't as it is a no win situation. I have it on good authority that the Head was incompetent, but I bet she wasn't the only Head in the County. I imagine it is very difficult for the council to do much about it.

Politicians and MP's in particular are there to lead - it is their responsibility to make judgements and let their opinions be known if requested by their constituents. Maria Miller has categorically failed.
In reading the venom, hatred and pure vitriol of some of the Tory bloggers in this paper over recent months towards Popley it is becoming self-evident that there is a lot of bigotry towards the estate within Tory ranks.
