Family of 'missing man' issue statement

THE family of a man who reappeared after going missing more than five years ago, have broken their silence.

Anthony Darwin, who lives in Ajax Close in Chineham, released a joint statement with his brother Mark through Cleveland Police this evening in relation to the re-appearance of their father John Darwin.

John Darwin's shattered kayak was found on a beach near his Hartlepool home in March 2002 and, despite extensive searches involving coastguards and helicopters, the father-of-two was never found and was presumed dead.

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Darwin was reported to have walked into a west London police station and said "I think I am a missing person."

A media frenzy followed in which the national media descended on the quiet residential area of Chineham on Monday and today.

It was believed John Darwin may have been staying at his son's house.

Cleveland Police have now released a statement on behalf of Anthony and his brother Mark.

It said: "The news of John's appearance came as a huge shock to the whole family. We are extremely happy that he is alive and looking forward to spending time with him.

"Anne, John's wife, has been informed of the good news and is delighted to hear it.

"We have spoken with John and he appears to be in good health. However, he currently has no memory of events since June 2000.

"We appreciate there is huge media interest in this story however due to John's memory loss there is little more we can add.

"Since Saturday evening we have been through a traumatic and emotional time and this continues to be a stressful time for John and the family."
