Improvement works begin on busy Chineham road

WORK to install a new toucan crossing on a busy Basingstoke road is now underway.

Hampshire County Council is installing the controlled crossing to the north of Binfields Roundabout, in Chineham in a bid to improve pedestrian safety along the A33.

In addition to the new crossing, footpaths leading up to the crossing will be widened to create space for pedestrians and cyclists who use the path, providing a safe route between homes and businesses to the south of the A33 with the Chineham Shopping Centre and Great Binfields Primary School, in Binfields Farm Lane.

Work on the improvement scheme is expected to be completed by the middle of November.

Hampshire County Council’s executive member for economy, transport and environment, Councillor Seán Woodward said: “These improvements will improve accessibility for local residents to local facilities and make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists, especially the mobility impaired and children.

“While there will inevitably be some short-term disruption during the construction of the scheme, this will be outweighed by the benefits to the community at Chineham once they are completed.”

Isn't there a pedestrian footbridge there already? Why do we have to disrupt an already busy road with another crossing?!!

Because Binfields Woods is not very well lit, and not an ideal place to walk through after dark. Though while I do agree that there needs to be a pedestrian crossing between Chineham and the Chineham Centre, I think it's a little too close to the roundabout exit.

This should not be before the roundabout , traffic is already getting too busy here and backing up along the A33 this will cause chaos during the busy times as time goes on. Perhaps if they build more paths longside roads would help around Basingstoke. There is the footbridge and also a crossing between Chineham and Binfields a little further up.
This is only creating more problems.
The reason we are now getting build up of traffic around Basingstoke is the traffic lights before roundabouts you do not need both it just causes a build up of traffic

Well last night was absolute chaos! It would be much better if they carried out the works overnight, or even one side at a time but no, one lane open each side is just asking for trouble. I saw one accident on the ring road roundabout and so many other near misses. It may be the summer holidays but these works aren't even due to finish until mid November, the kids go back to school beginning of September... how bad will it be then????
