FIREFIGHTERS spent over two hours tackling a house fire in Oakridge last night.

Around 34 firefighters from Basingstoke and Tadley arrived at Sutton Road at 22.41pm to find 50ft flames coming from the building.

An ariel ladder platform fire engine and special equipment unit from Basingstoke, and a multi role vehicle from Rushmoor were used to tackle the fire, which is thought to have started in a garage attached to the property.

Firefighters used eight breathing apparatus, two jets and one hose reel to extinguish the flames.

The occupants – a man and his wife – were not hurt in the blaze.

Firefighter Nicholas Prickett, from Basingstoke fire station, told The Gazette that the incident is still “under investigation”, adding: “We turned up and we could see 50ft flames in the air.

"The owner smelt the fire in the bathroom and went through the kitchen and opened up the garage and there it was well lit. He and his wife then got out.”
