A POPULAR dance-off which saw a Basingstoke school raise much-needed funds for charity has celebrated its second year.

Students at Fort Hill Community School, in Kenilworth Road, Winklebury hosted the school’s second dance-off, raising money for charity, Dreams Come True.

The popular event raised £360 for the charity, which aims to bring joy to terminally-ill children, through ticket sales and sales of cookies that were prepared by year 10 food technology students.

Michael Jackson themed moves, hip-hop and contemporary were just some of the styles that were performed by teams of dancers who took to the stage on the night.

A panel of judges including interim head of school, Vicky Essex, marked the dances using a set of criteria before the winners were announced.

Year 10 students Harry Nicoll, Bruin White, Alex Han, Frazier Hiller, Charles Klien and Adam Potts were crowned the winners of the competition after performing a routine which saw a mix of hip-hop and Michal Jackson inspired moves.

Second place went to year 10 pupils, Salmer Nyagimbo and Cally Pettifor and year seven student Molly Wright was awarded third place with a gymnastic-inspired routine.

Head of PE at the school and organiser of the dance off, Julia Bray told The Gazette: “We had over 200 people supporting and for a small school, that’s brilliant. Staff were there, parents were there and there were no more seats.

“It was just above and beyond what they produced last year. Students started rehearsing in December so they put a lot of effort in.”
