THREE patients have been taken to Southampton General Hospital following an accident on the M3 in the early hours of this morning.

Seventeen firefighters from Basingstoke fire station were dispatched to the incident involving two vehicles, on the M3 southbound between junction seven and eight, at 1.50am this morning.

The stretch of motorway was shut for 40 minutes while firefighters worked to release a trapped passenger, who had come out of the vehicle and was trapped between the vehicle and an embankment.

Four ambulances, a rapid response car and a hazardous area response team from the South Central Ambulance Service were sent to the scene.

A woman, man and a child were taken to Southampton General Hospital for further treatment after receiving medical attention at the scene. Their injuries are not known.
